About the team

The School of Biological Sciences is a research-intensive school that prides itself in providing innovative, research-informed, teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School has internationally recognised expertise in Computational Biology, Ecology and Conservation, Evolutionary Biology, Neuroscience and in Science Communication.

The Applied Bioinformatics group was founded in 2007 and it has established itself as a leading bioinformatics group in Australia. The current research activities include the second generation sequencing of complex genomes and metagenomics populations, genome annotation, diversity analysis, trait association and data visualisation.

About the opportunity

This position will support the ongoing research activities of the Edwards group supported by multiple ARC grants with delivery to industry partners. As an experienced bioinformatics researcher, you will lead multiple research projects with national and international collaborators in the area of crop genomics, perform data analysis, write reports and publish manuscripts in major journals.

As the Bioinformatician, you will also need to develop and maintain extensive research networks within and outside the university on a national and international level. You will contribute to Masters level courses, as well as plan and teach programming and bioinformatics-related workshops, and provide supervision to both Masters and PhD students.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computational genomics, or related field.
  • Ability in the development and publication of algorithms and novel approaches to understand large and complex crop genomes as well as experience in teaching MSc-level bioinformatics courses.
  • Strong computational background with extensive experience in applied bioinformatics.
  • Experience with Linux-based HPC systems (PBS, SLURM) and web design (HTML, JavaScript) as well as system administration of Linux-based work servers.
  • Ability to interpret, and understand statistical approaches.
  • The ability to apply and develop novel bioinformatics algorithms.
  • Proficiency in at least two programming languages (Python and R preferred).

About you

As an experienced bioinformatics researcher, you will be a highly motivated individual with the ability to work independently, show initiative and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. Previous experience in organising, hosting, and teaching programming and bioinformatics workshops would be advantageous.
