School of Earth Sciences

The School of Earth Sciences at The University of Western Australia undertakes diverse fundamental and applied research with recognised strengths in mineral geoscience, petroleum geoscience, geochemistry, hydrogeology and marine geoscience. The School has an international reputation in research and teaching with strong support from the mineral exploration, petroleum and groundwater industries, and well established collaborations with industry and state and federal government agencies. 

The School has been recognised internationally and nationally, with Earth and Marine Science ranked 32nd in the 2018 QS World University subject rankings and 3rd in 2018 QS University subject rankings and Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ratings above to well above world standard across the Earth Sciences sub disciplines.  Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs are underpinned by research activity and expertise, and the School attracts high calibre higher degree by research students into PhD and MPhil programs. 

The School also has strong industry–government engagement and collaborative research relationships especially via its Centre for Exploration Targeting, Centre for Energy Geoscience and research groups.

About the opportunity

This position will have responsibility for geoscience teaching and research and be expected to contribute to curriculum development in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The position is also expected to promote geoscience research and training capability and seek to strengthen and broaden engagement with external industry and government stakeholders.

The School is calling for applications from passionate and collegial individuals in Geoscience with discipline strength in metamorphic geology research with related skills in one or more of igneous geology, structural geology, geochronology and mineral deposit geology. The successful individual will have demonstrated skills in relevant micro-analytical techniques and will have access to the world-class facilities in UWA’s Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis, as well as cutting-edge instruments in the School.

To be considered for this position, you will have a PhD in Geoscience, excellent geoscience research track record with significant publication outputs and successful funding applications, experience in high quality teaching and supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD students and/or a willingness to develop postgraduate supervisory skills, and evidence of delivering high quality training in laboratory and field-based work.

The position will contribute to core activities within the School and Faculty through teaching and research, and research supervision, and development of the discipline and its interdisciplinary links. The successful appointee will also contribute to School, Faculty and University’s community and engagement outreach activities.
