  • Full-time (1FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis until 28/8/2028.
  • Base salary range: $80,243 – $88,940 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) at the University of Western Australia is host to the Australian Plant Phenomics Network (APPN), a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program supported by the Commonwealth Government. The APPN is a nationwide network of research facilities whose mission is to provide open access to advanced technologies for the digital phenotyping of horticultural and agricultural crops. The APPN node at UWA encompasses two primary research platforms: controlled environment phenotyping facilities, mobile phenotyping units and field sites.

This position is based within the School of Molecular Sciences, housed in the Bayliss Building, where research, undergraduate and postgraduate education span the fields of chemistry, chemical biology, human, microbial, and plant biochemistry, molecular biology and molecular genetics, materials, nanotechnology, omics technologies, synthetic biology, and systems biology. The School has a strong PhD cohort, successful, externally funded research programmes, and collaborations with national and international universities, industry, hospitals, and community stakeholders, generating high-quality publications, patents, and spin-out companies.

About the opportunity

  • You will develop, implement, and optimise cutting-edge digital and molecular phenotyping platforms.
  • You will act as the key contact for researchers, coordinating and supporting data-driven approaches to plant phenotyping and data management.
  • Responsibilities for both lab and fieldwork, with a strong focus on spectral data acquisition, analysis, and the management of research data in compliance with FAIR principles.

About you

  • Tertiary qualifications and relevant experience in remote sensing, plant science, computer science, or data science.
  • Considerable relevant research experience at an appropriate level, including experience in agricultural lab work, fieldwork, and data collection.
  • Expertise in image-based and spectral data analysis, including hyperspectral sensing.
  • Proven ability to prioritise own workload and to work both independently on routine tasks and as part of a team, escalating issues when needed.

Demonstrated customer service skills and ability to liaise with stakeholders in a culturally diverse environment and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Note: A current “C” class driver’s licence will be required by the successful applicant.  Occasional interstate travel may be required.  Occasional travel within the state may be required. Occasional weekend work.
