Research Fellow - Centre for Social Impact

  • Contribute to impactful research on critical issues like homelessness and poverty at the Centre for Social Impact.
  • Work with leading universities and stakeholders, using advanced data science to create meaningful insights that influence real-world solutions.
  • Part-time (0.6 FTE) appointment on a fixed-term basis until the end of June 2025.
  • Base salary range: Level A, $ $80,520 - $108,362 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a national research and education centre dedicated to catalysing social change for a better world. CSI is built on the foundation of four of Australia’s leading universities: UNSW, The University of Western Australia (UWA), Swinburne University of Technology and Flinders University.

About the opportunity

  • Engage in data preparation, develop ETL pipelines, and analyse large datasets to uncover valuable insights for diverse audiences.
  • Deploy and maintain predictive models and machine learning algorithms while ensuring data privacy and accuracy.
  • Work with stakeholders and team members to deliver data-driven solutions and drive continuous improvement through innovation.

About you

  • You will possess a postgraduate degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree with honours.
  • Proven hands-on experience in data science, including data preparation, analysis, visualisation, and effective communication of results through reports and dashboards.
  • Strong skills in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL, along with experience in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, Stata) and the Microsoft ecosystem (Power BI, SharePoint).
  • Exceptional ability to analyse complex datasets and present findings clearly, tailored for industry and public audiences, coupled with strong critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Familiarity with social services data systems, involvement in social research projects, and a working knowledge of Linux/UNIX environments and web development (HTML, JavaScript) is highly advantageous.
