About the opportunity

The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis (CMCA) is a multi-user, core facility supporting UWA’s research goals. It comprises a diverse range of instruments from basic to advanced, facilitating and providing research excellence through a focus on world-class facilities, matched with expertise and a concept-to-publication user pathway, to meet the characterisation requirements of researchers and industry through excellence in training, measurement and analysis.

Reporting to the EM Technique Group Leader, the primary responsibility of this role will be to support the Centre’s FIB-SEM facility, including technique promotion, instrument operation, performance and user training and providing support to researcher’s accessing relevant CMCA facilities.

The appointee will support collaborative research applications and will work in conjunction with senior staff to develop and deliver training programs and workshops. They will also be required to work in conjunction with senior staff to prepare and submit competitive funding applications for new instrumentation and ancillary facilities.

About you

With demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in FIB-SEM to support diverse research applications, the successful candidate will require the following:

  • A degree in a relevant subject area or significant postgraduate research experience.
  • Experience in FIB-SEM or related techniques such as SEM and TEM with the capacity and willingness to learn and apply new imaging and analytical techniques 
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and contribute as a productive member of a team 
  • The ability to provide clear instruction to students and researchers in a multiuser facility

About the CMCA

The CMCA is UWA’s characterisation core facility, housing a diverse range of instrument platforms including secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), electron microscopy and microanalysis, optical, confocal, and multiphoton microscopy, flow cytometry, NMR, X-ray diffraction, biological and molecular mass spectrometry, small animal imaging, scanning probe microscopy, and micro-CT.

The CMCA is the Western Australian node of the Australian Microscopy & Microanalysis Research Facility, and of the National Imaging Facility, which are Australian university-based national networks of characterisation core facilities.
