UWA Public Policy Institute

UWA is regarded as one of Australia’s top research institutions. Its strong research culture sees it attract high levels of competitive research funding. We operate more than 130 research and training centres and receive roughly 70 per cent of all research funding to Western Australian universities annually. We celebrate strong industry partnerships and excellent research, collaboration, outputs and training. We rank 72nd in QS, 101 in ARWU and 143th in THE rankings.

The UWA Public Policy Institute (PPI) reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), enabling activities bridging academic research and government, public and business needs. It provides informed leadership by maximising the policy impact of UWA research in Western Australia, Australia and the Indian Ocean region. The PPI is responsible for a range of activities, events, publications and programs, including running training and workshops for researchers on government relations, hosting public events on a range of social, economic, and political issues, and supporting the development of policy skills, networking and programs designed to engage students and researchers with the broader political context.

The Director of the UWA Public Policy Institute will report directly to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) and will be responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and co-ordination of the UWA Public Policy Institute, working with key partners internally and externally to maximise the translation of UWA research into policy impact. This will involve identifying opportunities for UWA research to have a impact on policy; strengthening capacity in policy engagement across the Schools; and ensuring that the University’s planning and strategic thinking take into account and facilitate policy impact more broadly.

With a demonstrated record of leadership and strategic vision, candidates will have the ability and energy to facilitate and promote the engagement of UWA academics with key policy makers. A strong commitment to working collegially with senior leaders, to ensure their active involvement in public policy activities and political awareness are essential, as are excellent interpersonal skills.
