  • Salary range: Level D, $146,992 -$161,715 p.a. plus employer contributed superannuation of 17%

About the team

The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is an equal joint venture established in 2009 between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia (UWA). ICRAR is one of the lead Australian organisations participating in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project.

The Centre is engaged in research and training in radio astronomy, astrophysics, simulations, data intensive astronomy, engineering, SKA pre-construction and bridging activities. ICRAR has a very active education and outreach program and also works closely with international and Australian collaborators including partners from industry. ICRAR was independently assessed to be among the top five radio astronomy Centres in the world. 

The Centre is also a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D). ICRAR strongly supports the principles of equity and diversity.

ICRAR UWA was awarded the Gold Pleiades award in 2019 by the Astronomical Society of Australia (ASA) for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in Astronomy.

About the opportunity

As the Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) Director, you will lead the development of the AusSRC from a growing collaboration of the partner institutions (ICRAR, CSIRO, The Pawsey Supercomputer Centre, Astronomy Australia Limited) and facilities (Australian SKA Pathfinder [ASKAP] and the Murchison Wide-field Array [MWA]), through the submission of a comprehensive funding proposal to the Commonwealth, to an operational capability that meets national and international requirements surrounding SKA precursors and the early science needs of SKA.

You will report to the Executive Director ICRAR, and have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Deputy Director CSIRO Centre for Astronomy and Space Science (CASS).

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:  

  • PhD in astronomy, physics or related discipline
  • World-renowned expertise in relevant areas of data intensive projects and research
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication
  • Outstanding publication record as evidenced by international refereed publications
  • Demonstrated ability to form and work effectively with national and international collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability to win research/development grants
  • Demonstrated experience in staff supervision.

About you:

To succeed in this role you will need to be a strong leader who is able to build effective and long-lasting relationships with national and international stakeholders. As the AusSRC Director, you will need to be an effective communicator and strategic planner who is able to participate in the international SRC Steering Committee work program and will ultimately lead the Australian participation in international SRC planning and operations. You will be strategically minded, able to define and promote the bigger picture for SRCs internationally, and provide the vision and direction for the development of the AusSRC.
