About the team

UWA Design is a dynamic and collegial multi-disciplinary School offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, History of Art and Fine Arts. The School is organised into the correlating five discipline groups, and it additionally houses the Australian Urban Design Research Centre (AUDRC). Architecture is the largest in terms of teaching, staffing and student cohort. Across the school more than 35 academic staff are engaged in teaching, research, practice, supervision and engagement roles. The School produces internationally renowned research through scholarship and creative practice in areas including housing futures; social impact design; product design and fabrication; renewable materials; urban ecology; design for human and environmental health; and architectural history and theory. Our School is future-focused and comprehensively prepares graduates for their chosen career or further study or research within Australia and around the world. The Architecture program was accredited in 2022 and received the maximum five-year term.

About the opportunity

We are looking for individuals who will enthusiastically support the strategic ambitions of the Architecture discipline to drive a future-focused and outward looking teaching and research agenda, grounded in our unique positioning on the Indian Ocean Rim in the world’s most populous region and in an environment of extraordinary biodiversity. As the appointee, you will contribute to the expanding of teaching, research and engagement capacity in the discipline, and will demonstrate expertise and willingness to actively engage in key areas including:

  • Teaching and curriculum development in one or more of the following streams within the Architecture program:
    • architectural construction, technology and materials; building codes and compliance; architectural documentation
    • thermal analysis, decarbonisation and life cycle assessment
    • architectural design
  • Contribution to research in one of the School’s priority areas
  • Contributions within the Architecture Discipline group
  • External collaborations and partnerships

You will undertake teaching as well as the development of curriculum in the undergraduate and postgraduate Architecture programs. You will supervise research students; demonstrate research-led teaching; and play a significant part in enhancing the research performance in Architecture. The role expects that you will have the capacity and willingness to attract research funds and develop collaborations with researchers and partners within and outside the School. You will also play a significant part in further developing the international reputation of the discipline; and contribute to the core service activities of the School and to the University’s community and engagement agenda.

About you 

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to contribute to our design studio program, and expand our expertise across core teaching areas delivering knowledge and skills fundamental to professional accreditation.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Professional qualification in Architecture (Master of Architecture or equivalent)
  • Registration or eligible to be registered as an architect in Western Australia with current practice experience (desirable)
  • PhD or equivalent research and/or professional experience in architecture or related field (desirable)
  • Capacity to support and strengthen the strategic ambitions and growth of the Architecture discipline and the School of Design
  • Successful record of developing, coordinating and delivering high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in one or more of
    • Architectural construction, technology and materials; building codes and compliance; architectural documentation
    • Thermal analysis, decarbonisation and life cycle assessment
    • Architectural design
  • Experience in developing, coordinating and teaching units that utilise the potential of new educational technologies and best educational practices
  • Research strengths and future research potential in scholarship and/or creative practice, in one of the existing or emerging areas of research priority in the School with local and international relevance (housing futures; speculative design; social impact design; product design and fabrication; renewable materials; and architectural history and theory)
  • Evidence of applications or capacity to apply for research or other external funding and/or forming research collaborations with multiple stakeholders
  • Evidence of experience or the capacity to supervise postgraduate research students   
  • Potential to increase School success in attracting regional and international students
  • Evidence of a collegiate attitude, effective teamwork and a commitment to working with diverse groups internally as well as externally with industry and government organisations to develop collaborative research projects
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in liaison with disciplinary, School and University colleagues, and/or governments or industry, as relevant
