About the area

Information is one of the University’s most valuable assets, underpinning teaching, research, engagement and operations. As digital transformation increases the volume, complexity and strategic value of information across the University, strong information governance is essential to ensure these assets are identified, managed, protected and used responsibly.

The Information Governance team provides leadership and expertise across privacy, information management, responsible information sharing and freedom of information. Through effective governance practices, regulatory compliance and trusted advice, the team strengthens trust in how the University collects, manages, protects and shares information, and supports accountable decision-making across the institution.

The Information Governance team sits within the Risk, Information, Safety and Compliance (RISC) directorate, within the UWA Operations Portfolio. RISC plays a critical role in embedding enterprise-wide risk management, strengthening compliance, supporting safe operations and fostering a positive, risk-aware culture across the institution.

About the opportunity

This fixed-term or secondment opportunity provides leave cover at an exciting time for information governance, with the chance to help shape a maturing enterprise-wide function, including the introduction of AI governance structures that manage risk while enabling the University to adopt emerging technologies safely, responsibly and confidently.

In this role, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the following areas:

  • Lead the continued development and maturity of a comprehensive information governance framework, including policies, standards, accountabilities and lifecycle management practices for the University's information and data assets.
  • Oversee the University’s privacy and responsible information sharing function, including promoting awareness and understanding of obligations under the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) and other applicable privacy legislation, conducting privacy impact assessments, implementing data loss prevention measures, and managing responses to data breaches, complaints and review requests.
  • Provide strategic leadership across information governance, privacy and information risk management, partnering with stakeholders across Legal, IT, Research, Education and People & Culture functions, ensuring information is appropriately identified, classified and protected.
  • Manage an enterprise-wide eDiscovery service to support the timely and accurate discovery of information in response to internal and external information requests, including freedom of information requests.
  • Lead and develop a team of four, fostering professionalism, best practice, and innovation in a safe and collaborative work environment.

About you

  • Experience developing and overseeing information governance frameworks within a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of privacy legislation, information access, security and disclosure requirements, and contemporary information governance frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and advise on legislation and legal agreements, providing pragmatic and strategic guidance to stakeholders on information protection and privacy requirements.
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing high-performing teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, consultation and organisational skills, and experience rolling out initiatives and requirements across an enterprise.

Note: Employment screening will include checks required to comply with the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence. A current National Police Clearance will be required by the successful applicant.
