Technician (Animal House)

  • Full-time (1.0 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
  • Base salary range: $66,987 – $74,199 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

Animal Care Services (ACS), within Research Infrastructure, supports the University’s research and teaching by providing best-practice care and housing for laboratory animals. The team operates in specialised containment facilities and ensures compliance with all regulatory, ethical, and statutory requirements.

About the opportunity

  • Deliver high-quality animal husbandry in a regulated research environment, including feeding, cleaning, monitoring animal health, and maintaining hygiene within containment facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant records (e.g. breeding, health, agistment) in line with Animal Ethics Committee and standard operating procedures.
  • Support research activities by preparing equipment and consumables, assisting with minor procedures, and ensuring sterilisation, biosecurity, and waste disposal standards are met.

About you

  • Certificate in Animal Technology (or equivalent) and/or relevant experience working in an animal research or laboratory animal facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry practices and animal welfare standards, including the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting researchers, staff, and students.
  • Comfortable working in a physically active role within containment environments and following strict biosecurity and safety protocols.

Note: Employment checks will include information on gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and related misconduct to meet legal obligations. A current National Police Clearance, and a “C” class driver’s licence will be required by the successful applicant. There will be rostered after-hours work required in this position. A pre-employment medical is also required prior to commencement in the position.
