About the area

The School of Humanities offers a rich intellectual environment across Classical and Historical Studies, Modern European Languages, Philosophical Studies, and English and Cultural Studies. Alongside undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the School supports an active research program.

Classics and Ancient History sits within the Department of Classical and Historical Studies. The discipline has a vibrant research culture, with regular seminars, public lectures and a growing graduate student community. Research strengths include Greco-Roman medicine, papyrology, Roman imperial history and historiography, Greek and Latin literatures, and Classical and Hellenistic Greek history.

About the opportunity

  • Undertake an independent program of research in Classics and Ancient History, or a closely related discipline (such as Classical Archaeology, Classical Reception Studies, or Byzantine Studies), while based at UWA’s Crawley campus.
  • Contribute to the School and Department’s research culture, including participation in departmental research seminars and engagement with staff and graduate students.
  • Deliver at least one accessible public lecture on a topic of your choice with broad appeal to a non-specialist audience.

About you

  • A PhD in a field relevant to Classics and Ancient History, or a significant publication record in Classics and Ancient History or a closely related field.
  • A strong track record of research publications relative to career opportunity.
  • A clear and compelling research agenda to be undertaken during the fellowship at UWA.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with staff and students at all levels, together with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Potential to collaborate with current UWA staff in Classics and Ancient History is desirable.
